'For conspicuous gallantry during the capture of part of the HINDENBURG Line on 3rd May 1917, in command of his platoon after his officer had fallen early in the action. He showed great powers of initiative in reorganisisng his men in support of Lieutenant. PICKETT's party and himself took a prominent part in the bomb fighting. Though severely wounded in the foot he remained on duty until ordered to the Aid Post.'
