Found Guilty, 14 March 1917, of being absent from parade, 5th training Bn, Rollestone: forfeited 2 days' pay and confined to camp for 2 days.

Found Guilty, Rollestone, 24 September 1917, of (1) drunkenness, (2) disorderly conduct at Fargo Hospital: awarded 5 days' confined to camp.

Proceeded overseas to France, 20 November 1917; taken on strength, 17th Bn, in the field, 25 November 1917.

Found Guilty, 19 January 1918, of using insubordinate and abusive language to his superior officer: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Found Guilty, 24 April 1918, of being absent without leave, 8-14 April 1918: awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 27 June 1918. Found Guilty of deserting His Majesty's Forces from the forward area from about 5 am, 17 May, until arrested by Military Police at Oisement at about 5.30 pm, 27 May 1918. Sentenced to 5 years' penal servitude.

Admitted to 5th Military Prison, 20 July 1918.

Admitted to V.D. Prison Camp Annexe, Rouen, 17 November 1918; total period of treatment for venereal disease: 21 days.

Disembarked under escort, Southampton, 17 June 1919, and admitted to HM Prison, Gloucester. Sentence commuted to 1 year's imprisonment with hard labour.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Port Sydney', 22 September 1919.
