Military Medal 'For his splendid example of bravery and coolness under fire. At ARMENTIERES on the night of 11th February, 1917, when withdrawing from the enemy wire in a fighting patrol, he personally led several small unwounded parties of the patrol across No Man's Land to our own Front Line. When he had completed this task, he returned repeatedly into No Man's Land and assisted to carry in wounded men for distances of 250 to 200 yards, being under heavy machine gun fire and shrapnel from the enemy trenches. Finally he guided in the covering parties for the patrol. This action was witnessed by 2nd Lieutenant TAYLOR and Sergeant INGRAM, and is the second occasion on which he has similarly acted. previously, at ARMENTIERES on the 31st January, 1917 during a raid, he displayed great courage, rescuing three wounded men under very heavy machine gun fire.'
