''For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When heavy casualties made a large gap in the first attacking wave he steadied the advance of his platoon returned to our old line, and brought up other men to fill the gap. In consolidating the new line he showed great energy and courage, supervising his company frontage in the absence of its commander.''
