War service: Western Front Disembarked Plymouth, England, 2 October 1916, and marched in to 10th Training Bn. Transferred to 8th Training Bn, Taken on strength, 37th Bn, 26 October 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 22 November 1916. Attached for duty to 10th Australian Machine Gun Company, 10 December 1916. Admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, 4 June 1917 (influenza); rejoined unit, 12 June 1917. Transferred to and taken on strength of 10th Machine Gun Company, 30 August 1917. To Conc. Camp, 30 September 1917; rejoined unit from Camp, 7 October 1917. Proceeded on leave, 16 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 8 March 1918. Wounded in action, 26 May 1918 (mustard gas), and admitted to 11th Field Ambulance, and transferred same day to 41st Stationary Hospital, Rouen; to 2nd Stationary Hospital, Abbeville, 24 June 1918; to England, 27 June 1918, and admitted to 1st Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge, 28 June 1918. Transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 28 June 1918. Discharged to Littlemore Camp, Weymouth, and marched in to No 2 Command Depot, 5 September 1918. Defence replied, 19 December 1919, that 'there is nothing on his records to show that his conduct and character ... was other than good'.
