Attached for duty to 10th Australian Machine Gun Company, 10 December 1916.

Admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, 4 June 1917 (influenza); rejoined unit, 12 June 1917. Transferred to and taken on strength of 10th Machine Gun Company, 30 August 1917. To Conc. Camp, 30 September 1917; rejoined unit from Camp, 7 October 1917.

Proceeded on leave, 16 February 1918; rejoined unit from leave, 8 March 1918.

Wounded in action, 26 May 1918 (mustard gas), and admitted to 11th Field Ambulance, and transferred same day to 41st Stationary Hospital, Rouen; to 2nd Stationary Hospital, Abbeville, 24 June 1918; to England, 27 June 1918, and admitted to 1st Eastern General Hospital, Cambridge, 28 June 1918. Transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 28 June 1918. Discharged to Littlemore Camp, Weymouth, and marched in to No 2 Command Depot, 5 September 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Gaika', 8 November 1918; disembarked Melbourne, 29 December 1918; discharged, Melbourne (medically unfit), 5 February 1919.

Total war service: 1053 days (of which 866 days were abroad)

Enlisted in the Royal Australian Navy, 13 August 1919, for 7 years.

Department of the Navy wrote to the Department of Defence, 12 December 1919: 'I am directed by the Naval Board to inform you that Stoker 2nd Class Cedric A. Bayliss, O.N. 11547 has requested to be permitted to count time served in the Australian Imperial Expeditionary Force towards the award of Good Conduct Badges in the Royal Australian Navy.' Defence replied, 19 December 1919, that 'there is nothing on his records to show that his conduct and character ... was other than good'.
