War service: Egypt, Western Front, England Transferred to 4th Division Field Bakery, Serapeum, Egypt, 15 April 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 6 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, 13 June 1916. Admitted to hospital, 19 March 1917 (bronchitis); transferred to England, 28 March 1917, and admitted to Kitchener Military Hospital, Brighton, 29 March 1917. Died of pneumonia, Sutton Veny Military Hospital, 18 November 1917. In 'Remarks on interest to next of kin' file, Lt J. DRAMPTON, No. 1 Command Depot, wrote (10 December 1917): 'The funeral was beautifully carried out. There was a full band and firing party from No. 1 Command Depot, the body being carried on a gun carriage. Many convalescents from Sutton Veny Military Hospital followed the body to the grave, while comrades of the deceased guarded the gun carriage. The grave is situated last of a row of Australians in the Catholic portion of the beautiful old village churchyard of Sutton Veny. The relatives of the deceased can rest assured that all that was possible, both in life and in death, was done for him.' Medals: British War Medal, Victory Medal |
