War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Embarked from Alexandria to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force (Gallipoli), 7 April 1915; landed at Gallipoli, 7 am, 25 April 1915. Recorded in diary: 'It was a very impressive sight watching the ships bombarding the coast & land batteries. they opened fire just as land was breaking & kept it up nearly all day.' Evacuated to Mudros, sick, 28 December 1916; transferred to St Paul's Hospital, Malta, 5 February 1916. Rejoined unit at Serapeum, 14 March 1916. Proceeded from Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 March 1916; disembarkedMarseilles, 28 March 1916. Promoted sergeant, 17 April 1916. Admitted to hospital, 11 August 1916 (fractured clavicle); transferred to England, 19 August 1916, and admitted to 2nd Birmingham War Hospital. Granted furlough, 16 September 1916.
