'This man volunteered to bring a message back from the HINDENBURG Line on the morning of the 11th April 1917. He knew that he volunteered for this service with very little chance of getting through the heavy barrage of Artillery and Machine gun fire which then swept "No Man's Land". Nearly all the previous runners who had attempted this had been shot down and he knew it. By proceeding from shell hole to shell hole he succeeded in crossing the danger zone and delivered his dispatch to Battalion Headquarters. he also displayed great courage and devotion to duty during the earlier fighting in the trenches. For his conspicuous gallantry he is strongly recommended for distinction.'
