During rescue operations he entered a mine tunnel and descended the shaft in search of an officer. After placing a rope round this officer, who was insensible, he was just able to reach the mouth of the shaft. On recovering from the effects of the gas,he again descended the shaft to complete the rescue, but was again overcome by the fumes. Later he volunteered a third time but was not allowed to descend.'
