War Service:Disembarked Plymouth, England, 10 July 1916. Proceeded overseas to France 23 November 1916. He was admitted to hospital on 16 December 1916, suffering from pharyngitis and mumps. He rejoined his unit on 7 April 1917. On 24 April he was admitted to hospital suffering from a septic scar on his abdomen, and was discharged to duty on 24 March 1917. He was appointed Farrier Shoesmith on 30 June 1917. Proceeded on leave to England on 12 January 1918, rejoined his unit 13 March 1918. Charged with being absent without leave from 10 pm 8 July 1918 to 9 am 9 July 1918. Awarded 7 days field punishment No. 2, and forfeited 8 days pay. He was promoted to Lance Corporal Farrier on 14 September 1918, and to Corporal on 18 January 1919. Married Doris Bottomley at Lambeth in London on 2 August 1919. He was granted indefinite leave on 15 August 1919, and was awaiting a family ship for his return to Australia. Returned to Australia per "Orvieto", disembarked 15 December 1919.
