'For conspicuous gallantry and determination during a raid on the enemy's trenches. Though wounded by a bullet in the leg on entering the trench, he pushed on with great dash, accounted for several of the enemy, and captured five prisoners and a machine gun. His pluck and good leadership conduced much to the success of the raid.'
