'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During a very severe enemy attack he worked unceasingly in the performance of his duties, showing the greatest energy and resource and a complete disregard of all danger, and it was in a very great measure due to his personal exertions that the firing line was so well supplied with ammunition and bombs.'
