War service: Egypt, Gallipoli, Western Front Medals: 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal Together with 2668 Pte (later Lt) William Charles SCURRY, 7th Bn, Lawrence invented the self-firing rifle device that was used successfully to deceive Turkish forces while Australian troops were being evacuated from Gallipoli, December 1915. On the Western Front he sustained a serious shrapnel wound in October 1917, a piece of shrapnel being logded too close to the aorta to allow its surgical removal. After the war he became a successful businessman in Bendigo, Victoria. ~ |
