Military Cross 'During the attack east of Mont St. Quentin, on 2nd September 1918, he was in charge of a party of 12 men, who advanced for 1,000 yards against heavy opposition until held up by a hostile machine gun. He rushed the post single handed, killing several of the crew and putting the remainder to flight. A few minutes later he repeated the performance on another machine gun post, but was severely wounded. His gallantry and initiative were splendid.'
