Military Medal 'North of POLYGON WOOD on 27th/28th September, 1917, for excellent work as scout and guide. On the night 27th/28th September, 1917, when acting as guide to working party he showed great courage and initiative. The enemy commenced shelling heavily along the track being used. Private BEALE halted the party and went forward alone and found an alternative route. He returned and guided the party safely to their destination. He also volunteered to reconnoitre the adjoining Sectors, especially the left sector which the Battalion expected to relieve. He proceeded to the front line in left sector and gained all information possible and supplied a map showing same which he sketched.'
