'At NOREUIL on the 8th April, 1917, Lance Sergeant BEALE was in charge of his platoon working on a road through the village. A very sudden and heavy shell fire was brought to bear on the party by the enemy, causing casualties. As further work was impossible, Lance Sergeant BEL withdrew his men from the village to a more sheltered spot and seeing that some were missing went back to NEROL which was still being heavily shelled, searched for his men who had taken refuge behind walls etc. and brought them all out. This necessitated several journeys into the village. He also saw that the wounded were taken clear of the village. His action undoubtedly saved further casualties.'
