Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 17 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 23 June 1916.

Wounded in action, 19 July 1916 (gun shot wound, tight leg); admitted to 8th Field Ambulance, 20 July 1916; transferred same day to 2nd Casualty Clearing Station; by Ambulance Train to Lady Hadfield's Ango-American Hospital, Wimereux; to England, 22 July 1916, and admitted to 1st Southern General Hospital, Kings Heath, Birmingham, 23 July 1916; discharged on furlough, 3 August 1916. Marched in to 8th Training Bn from No 1 Command Depot, 26 August 1916. Proceeded overseas to France, 16 September 1916; rejoined Bn, in the field, 30 September 1916.

Admitted to 38th Casualty Clearing Station, 2 December 1916 (trench feet); transferred to 22nd General Hospital, Camiers, 8 December 1916; to England, 10 December 1916, and admitted same day to 1st Southern General Hospital, Birmingham (trench feet: severe); discharged on furlough, 30 April 1917, to report to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 15 May 1917.

Marched out to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 14 June 1917; marched in to No 3 Command Depot, Hurdcott, 29 June 1917.

Married Elsie Cooper SHAW, spinster, aged 22, at Harborne Anglican Church, Stafford, 14 July 1917.

Found guilty of being absent without leave from 12 noon, 24 August, till 3.40 pm, 7 September 1917: awarded 16 days' Field Punishment No 2, and forfeited a total of 31 days' pay.

Marched in to Overseas Training Brigade, 12 September 1917.

Found guilty, 17 September 1917, of being absent from 6.30 am parade: awarded 5 days' Field Punishment No 2 (sentence to be read in conjunction with previous sentence).

Accidentally wounded, 1 February 1918 (gun shot wound, left ankle); admitted same day to 14th Australian field Ambulance, and thence to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to Ambulance Train No 25, 23 February 1918, and admitted to Liverpool Merchants' Hospital, Etaples. Transferred to England, 27 February 1918, and admitted to Bath War Hospital, 28 February 1918; transferred to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, Southall, 21 March 1918; discharged on furlough, 26 March 1918, to report to 2nd Auxiliary Hospital, 3 April 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Dunluce Castle', 8 April 1918; discharged, Adelaide, 28 November 1918 (medically unfit: amputated left foot).
