Underwent operation for haemorrhoids at 5th Australian General Hospital, Melbourne: OC reported, 25 October 1916, that he was 'fit for discharge and enlistment'. War service: Western Front Embarked Melbourne, 11 May 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 20 July 1917. and marched into 6th Training Bn. Proceeded overseas to France, 11 October 1917. Admitted to 2nd General Hospital, Havre, 11 October 1917 (gastritis); transferred to England, 21 December 1917, and admitted to Beaufort War Hospital, Bristol, 22 December 1917; transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 11 January 1918.
