Statement, Red Cross File No 1590211, Lt W.J. CRAZE, 58th Bn, 27 July 1917: 'This man was a Bomber for D. Coy. 58th Battn. He went out with his Coy. on July 19th 1916. The whole platoon went over the top in the attack at Fromelles Front opposite Fleurbaix. When on No Man's Land opposite "Pinney's Avenue" I saw this ma hit (I think by shell fire) and fall. Sgt. Hannon of D. Coy. 58th Battn. went to his assistance but found that he was quite dead. He reported his death to me, but was unable to bring the body in, in face of heavy enemy fire.'

Second statement, 4491 Pte F. FORD, 58th Bn, 11 December 1916: 'We attacked near Vermeilles on the 19th July, three Brigades of Australians and others, and we failed and we had to come back to our own lines. C. Company was told off to carry up ammunition. [4576 J.E.] Ryan and Lepp were on that job; it was very dangerous in no-man's-land (sic) there, and they got missing, there was machine gun [fire] and shelling both. Most of the wounded were picked up that weren't too far on. Both of them went over with us, and went well on.'
