Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an attack on the Hindenburg Line North of BELLICOURT on 30th September 1918. During the whole course of the attack, Private Lewis, No 1 of a Lewis gun, acted with great gallantry and displayed initiative of a high order when the enemy counter attacked strongly against the trench captured by our assaulting troops. Private LEWIS, seeing a small party of his comrades in danger of being outflanked immediately advanced into an isolated position and used his gun with deadly effect upon the enemy, the majority of whom were killed or wounded. Finding he could not bring effective fire to bear from the ground he rested his gun on the shoulder of his No 2, No 3138 Private J. McINNES, both men standing up in face of heavy Machine Gun fire from the flank. His prompt action saved his comrades from being surprised from the rear and contributed to the failure of the enemy counter attack.'
