Distinguished Conduct Medal

'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. When all his officers had been killed he took charge of his company during a heavy hostile attack, and displayed qualities of leadership and courage that were beyond praise. He personally and at great risk, under heavy fire, dug out two men who had been buried by a shell in their trench, and thereby saving their lives. His splendid example had a wonderful effect upon the men.'
