Disembarked HT 'Nile', Alexandria, under escort from Marseilles, 5 October 1916. Found guilty, 9 October 1916, of being absent without leave, 25 August-9 October 1916, by embarking on HMT 'Megantic', under a false name: awarded loss of 40 days' pay. Embarked Alexandria on board HT 'Minnetenka' to join the British Expeditionary Force, 22 October 1916. Found guilty, No 4 Camp, England, 19 March 1917, of (1) Absent without leave from Tattoo, 17 March, to 0845 hrs, 18 March 1917; (2) neglecting to obey an order in that he did not put spare clothing in his kit bag: awarded 3 days' Field Punishment No 2 and total forfeiture of 4 days' pay, i.e. £1.0.0. Proceeded overseas to France from Australian Army Service Corps Training Depot, Parkhouse, 12 September 1917.
