'On the early morning of the 29th SEPTEMBER 1918, Driver LEWTAS was in charge of a limber carting material for forward roads working forward to BONY. During this work he came under very heavy H.E. and Gas Shell fire, and although unable to obtain any cover, he carried on his job throughout the operation - during which he had to replace one of his mules which was wounded. Throughout the whole proceedings he showed great courage, coolness and devotion to duty, and set a very fine example to all around, by the way he looked after the animals in his charge - instead of considering his own safety.'
