Distinguished Conduct Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when he led his section in a bombing attack against a party of the enemy double his strength. He drove the enemy far enough along the sap to establish a block, but his supply of bombs ran out, and he was forced to retire a little. He then picked up an enemy's rifle, and held the enemy at bay until a fresh supply of bombs was obtained, when, after a hard fight he regained his former position.'
