War service: Egypt Embarked Sydney on HMAT 'Euripides', 20 October 1914. Discharged from Australian Imperial Force, Egypt, 11 March 1915 (undesirable). Letter from Australian Red Cross Society, 7 March 1916, to the Officer-in-Charge of base records reads, 'The wife of [Private Beattie] has been to this Office to inquire about the above Soldier and she informs us that she has been told at the Victoria Barracks, Sydney, on the 16th March, 1915, that the above Soldier was discharged in Egypt and that no further pay would be given to her. The Authorities appeared to be unable to give any reason for his discharge, but showed her a cable:- "1197, John Beattie, discharged, Stop all pay." The wife is naturally very distressed about this and seems to be unable to get any satisfactory reason as to why her husband was discharged. If you think that you could give us the reason for communication to her, we think it would be a great help to her, but if, for any good reason, you feel that this information should not be imparted to the wife, we shall quite understand'.
