'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. During the period under review he has performed most valuable service in his responsible position, indefatigable in devotion to duty, and distinguishing himself by his courage and disregard of danger. He himself conducted carrying parties with rations and supplies through heavily shelled areas to troops in the forward line, and at all times his loyal thoroughness and soldierly bearing have materially assisted in maintaining a high standard of discipline in the battalion.'
