'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On one occasion, when in charge of a party engaged in establishing communications through a wood to the forward area, he behaved with great gallantry under heavy enemy fire, getting all the wounded to the dressing station, and by his personal example encouraging the men in their difficult task so that the work was completed in spite of the enemy fire.'
