Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. On 30th September, 1918, near BONY this man, in the absence of his gun commander, took charge. During the operations against BONY he greatly assisted the advance of the infantry by successfully engaging under very heavy artillery and machine gun fire three enemy machine guns that checked the advance at different stages. Later, by his prompt action, he dispersed a machine gun team trying to come into action. The initiative displayed by this soldier and his personal disregard for danger proved of great assistance to the infantry, as well as setting a splendid example to his comrades.'
