'During the operations east of YPRES on 4th October 1917, whilst employed on the construction of a Strong Point he noticed an Infantryman who was moving across to the front line, wounded by machine gun fire. He ran out and brought the wounded man to safety and after dressing his wounds carried him over tjhe ridge through an enemy barrage and placed him in the shelter of a dugout. Throughout the day although the work was subjected to heavy fire he displayed great coolness and set an excellent example to his comrades.'
