'During the operations against Mont St. Quentin on 31 August, 1918, he was working with his section on a heavily shelled footbridge, which was urgently required to pass a brigade across the Somme. Although his officer and half the section were wounded, he persisted in his work with the greatest courage and determination so that the bridge was completed in time.'
