Found guilty, 18 June 1916, of being absent without leave from 6.30 am, 16 June, till 8.30 pm, 17 June 1916: forfeited 2 days' pay. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 16 July 1916, on charge of when on Active Service being absent without leave from 6.30 am till 7 pm, 9 July 1916: found guilty; awarded 28 days' Field Punishment No 1. Attached to 8th Entrenching Bn, 11 August 1916. Proceeded to join 4th Bn, 23 September 1916. Proceeded to hospital, 26 November 1916. Found guilty, 4 December 1916, of drunkenness and being absent without leave from 10.30 till 11.30, 2 December 1916: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2. Tried by Field General Court Martial, 25 May 1917, on charge of deserting his Majesty's Service; pleaded 'Not Guilty'; found 'Guilty' of being absent without leave; awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour. Sent to Corps Compound 'for safe keeping', 6 June 1917. Remainder of sentence suspended from 22 June 1918; rejoined Bn, 27 June 1918.
