Proceeded to join 4th Bn, 23 September 1916.

Proceeded to hospital, 26 November 1916.

Found guilty, 4 December 1916, of drunkenness and being absent without leave from 10.30 till 11.30, 2 December 1916: awarded 14 days' Field Punishment No 2.

Tried by Field General Court Martial, 25 May 1917, on charge of deserting his Majesty's Service; pleaded 'Not Guilty'; found 'Guilty' of being absent without leave; awarded 2 years' imprisonment with hard labour.

Sent to Corps Compound 'for safe keeping', 6 June 1917.

Remainder of sentence suspended from 22 June 1918; rejoined Bn, 27 June 1918.

Admitted to 93rd Field Ambulance, 27 June 1918 (burns, left foot), and transferred same day to 1st Australian Casualty Clearing Station; to Ambulance Train No 35, 29 June 1918, and admitted same day to 2nd General Hospital, Boulogne; transferred to England, 2 July 1918, and admitted same day to Manor Court Hospital, Folkestone; transferred to 1st Australian Auxiliary Hospital, Harefield, 16 September 1918; discharged to Littlemoor Camp, 4 October 1918.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Suevic', 6 January 1919; disembarked Melbourne, 5 January 1919, for onward travel to Sydney; discharged (medically unfit: ulcer, left ankle), Sydney, 12 February 1921.
