Military Medal 'During the attack east of ZONNEBEKE on 9th October, 1917, this N.C.O. was with his Company which was sent forward to reinforce the front line. He was detailed to take charge of a patrol and moving forward under intense enemy shelling and sniping fire succeeded in gaining and bringing back valuable information regarding the position of the front line and the lack of supports on the flank. During attack on DAISY WOOD he moved his party through very exposed ground to the newly established position on the far side, and under increasingly heavy shelling and rifle fire, was continuously exposed over open and exposed ground for 8 hours hours, keeping touch with troops on his right. His splendid disregard for personal safety set a fine example to the members of his patrol and was responsible for the success of the important duty allotted to him.'
