Wounded in action, 23 January 1917 (gun shot wounds, jaw, both legs, left arm, scrotum), and admitted to 10th Australian Field Ambulance, and transferred to 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station; transferred to 13th Stationary Hospital, Boulogne, 27 January 1917; to England, 29 January 1917, and admitted to Bath War Hospital, 30 January 1917 (multiple shell wounds: severe); transferred to 3rd Auxiliary Hospital, Dartford, 28 February 1917; discharged to No 2 Command Depot, Weymouth, 9 April 1917.

Commenced return to Australia on board HT 'Benalla', 25 August 1917; discharged (medically unfit), Sydney, 28 November 1917.
