Military Medal 'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty at ESTREES, east of PERONNE, during the attack on 4th October, 1918. Many wounded were lying round our newly captured trenches, and this man did splendid work in bandaging their wounds, thus saving many lives. Regardless of the fact that two stretcher bearers had been killed in doing the same work at this spot, he continued in his self sacrificing labours with the greatest coolness and determination. Shortly afterwards seeing that our left flank was in the air, he moved his men down there under heavy enfilade fire, and satisfactorily protected the left of the Company from a local enemy counter attack. Throughout the remainder of the day he set a splendid example, inspiring everyone with a spirit of offensiveness and cheerfulness.'
