Private Mahoney was dangerously ill with pneumonia on 13 February 1916, and was admitted to hospital at Heliopolis. He was ill until he embarked with the 27th Battalion for service overseas, per the HT 'Franconia' on 2 August 1916. He was transferred to the 14th Training Battalion. While on active service, he was absent without leave from 0600 12 August 1916 to 1430 14 August 1916. Forfeited a total of 10 days pay. On 29 September 1916, he proceeded to France, and was transferred to the 32nd Battalion. He was wounded in action on 8 December 1916, and rejoined his unit on 22 December 1916. He was appointed Lance Corporal on 19 April 1917. On 24 January 1918, he was sent to a Lewis Gun course, and rejoined his unit on 14 February 1918. He was wounded on 19 February, and sent to hospital in England. After his stay in hospital he was allowed two weeks furlough,from 31 July 1918 to 14 August 1918, before he left England for his return to Australia on 15 August 1918. |
