'For exceptional bravery and devotion to duty at CONTALMAISON in the laying and maintenace of telephone wire during period 25th July, 1916 - 5th August, 1916, especially on night 4th/5th August, 1916, when he remained without cover in the midst of an intense barrage repairing lines between Brigade and 68th Brigade on its right. The maintenance of communication between 5th Australian Infantry Brigade and the flank Brigades was mainly due to the coolness and absolute disregard of enemy shell fire under which Sapper MAILEY carried out his exceptionally dangerous duties.'
