'At POLYGON WOOD on 26th and 27th September 1917, Private MANN, who is an Observer on the Battalion Headquarters Staff, showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. He went forward with the attack and took part in the fighting for the final objective, after which he helped to establish an observation post and to maintain same throughout the whole operation in spite of heavy enemy artillery and machine gun fire. he continually went forward to the front line, often through heavy barrages, and brought back intelligence of the greatest value. He, moreover, found time to assist in bringing in wounded, which work he performed under heavy machine gun fire.'
