First enlisted at Private F C MARDEL No. 622 in 1914 and then re-enlisted as Private No. 3184 on 4 November 1916 in the 47th Battalion, 8th Reinforcement. He sailed from Sydney on the HMAT A64 "Demosthenes" on 22 December 1916. When he enlisted the second time he gave his occupation as a journalist from Wickham Terrace, Brisbane aged 32 years. Next of kin was his wife, Mrs Ada Dorothy Mardel, care of Mrs Doctor Brymaro, Harcourt Street, New Farm, Brisbane, Queensland
