War service: found guilty of being absent from a 2 pm parade, 17 February 1916: awarded forfeiture of one day's pay. Found guilty of being absent without leave, 2-3 March 1916: awarded forfeiture of 6 days' pay and 146 hours detention.

Proceeded from Alexandria, Egypt, to join the British Expeditionary Force, 21 March 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 27 March 1916.

Found guilty of being absent without leave from all parades, 10-11 April 1916: awarded 14 days' confinement to barracks. Found guilty of being absent without leave, 7-8 June 1916: awarded 60 days Field Punishment No. 2. Found guilty of being absent without leave from a 9.15 am special parade, 3 July 1916: awarded three days Field Punishment No 2. Found guilty of being absent without leave, 9 September 1916: awarded 28 days Field Punishment No 2.

To hospital (myalgia), 26 March 1917; rejoined unit, 31 July 1917. On leave to England, 23 August-7 September 1917. Appointed Lance Corporal, 24 September 1917.

Wounded in action, 4 October 1917; rejoined unit in Belgium, 29 November 1917.

Found guilty by Divisional General Court Martial, 27 May 1918, of being absent without leave, 3 April-6 May 1918: awarded 90 days Field Punishment No 2 and forfeiture of 144 days' pay.

Transferred to 26th Bn, 12 October 1918. Admitted to 7th General Hospital (venereal disease), 23 November 1918; discharged to Central Training Depot, Parkhouse, 17 January 1919; total treatment: 45 days. Found guilty of failing to carry out sentry duties properly, 8 January 1919: awarded 14 days Field Punishment No 2 and forfeiture of 14 days' pay.

Commenced return to Australia, 9 February 1919; discharged, 16 May 1919.
