Detached to Railway Construction Unit, 28 March 1918. Admitted to 75th Casualty Clearing Station, 5 May 1918 (tonsillitis); transferred to 47th Stationary Hospital, 7 May 1918; to 24th Stationary Hospital, 14 May 1918; to 31st General Hospital, Cairo, 24 May 1918; to Convalescent Depot, Boulac, 12 June 1918; rejoined 2nd Light Horse Training Regiment, Moascar, 22 June 1918. Transferred to 7th Light Horse Regiment, 6 July 1918; taken on strength, in the field, 9 July 1918. Found guilty, 28 June 1918, of being absent without leave from 9.30 pm to 10.25 pm, 22 June 1918 while a convalescent: forfeited 2 days' pay. Detached to School of Instruction, 12 July 1918; rejoined unit from detachment, 12 August 1918. Memorandum from Lt-Gen H.G. Chauvel to Minister for Defence: '[Marshall] 'admitted on 29th July 1918, at Richon-le Zion, Palestine, to having committed a gross indecency with a male person at Richon-le-Zion on the 24th July 1918. The circumstances were particularly revolting, and it was not considered desirable to try him by Court Martial. He is being returned to Australia by the Transport Wiltshire under surveillance. It is recommended that he be discharged from the A.I.F.' Marched out to Suez awaiting return to Australia, 26 August 1918.
