'Staff Sergeant BELL has been continuously with the guns during the operations from August 8th to September 3rd, 1918, between HAMEL and CLERY on the SOMME, going from battery to battery, supervising, attending to and effecting repairs to guns as they were put out of action. he has performed this work under practically continuous hostile shell fire, which was often very heavy, and as a result, the fire power of the Brigade has never been reduced during the operations. He has throughout shown an utter disregard of his own safety, and has been an excellent example to others.'
