'On 12th October, 1917, East of YPRES, for conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in action. in the absence of both his Sergeant and Corporal, who had been wounded early in the operation, he filled both positions and organised visual stations and laid down line and almost alone maintained communication between his Battalion and Brigade Forward Station. He showed remarkable courage and devotion under fire.'
