'For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in the operations at HERVILLY on 17th/18th September, 1918. Corporal MARTIN laid and maintained telephone lines to new positions under heavy artillery and machine gun fire. He worked continually on these lines and by his skill and determination enabled communication to be maintained.'
