Distinguished Conduct Medal

'He repeatedly swam out into the river under heavy fire, and in full view of the enemy, during bridging operations at Makhadet Hajla on the night of the 21-22 March 1918, in order to perform his task of arranging cables and anchorages for the pontoons. He showed dash, and perfect coolness under fire, and afforded an inspiring example for others.'
