'On 29th September, 1918, during operations South of BONY, Private BELL did excellent work as a Company Runner, when the Company was engaged in mopping-up the Hindenburg Line. On the evening of the 29th September, 1918 he had to pass through a heavy enemy machine gun barrage no less than three difference times, carrying messages from the front line to the support line. As the messages were very urgent, he had to make his runs over the top of the ground, as going through the Communication Trench, which was some distance away, would take far too long. In the early morning of 30th September, 1918, he again did excellent work in carrying messages to advanced Battalion Headquarters under heavy enemy Artillery Fire. Owing to Private BELL'S devotion to duty and promptness in delivering messages, several enemy strong points were overcome.'
