Embarked Melbourne, 30 October 1917; admitted to ship's hospital, 19 December 1917; disembarked Devonport, England, 26 December 1917, and admitted to 4th Southern General Hospital, Plymouth (mumps); discharged to No 1 Command Depot, Sutton Veny, 5 February 1918; marched in to 10th Training Bn, Sutton Mandeville, 12 February 1918; marched out to 2nd Training Bn, Fovant, 12 February 1918.

Proceeded overseas to France, 7 April 1918; taken on strength, 40th Bn, 23 April 1918.

Appointed Lance Corporal, 18 May 1918; Temporary Corporal, 30 June 1918.

Reported missing in action, 31 August 1918; subsequently confirmed taken prisoner of war in German hands.

Repatriated from Germany; arrived in England, 9 January 1919.

Granted leave, 13 January-14 February 1919.

Granted leave (Non-Military Employment) with pay and subsistence (fees of £25.0.0), 15 February-20 October 1919, to attend Braesnose College, Oxford University. Leave extended to 31 December 1919. Granted further leave, without pay but with subsistence of £87.0.0 and fees of £24.18.0. On expiry of NME granted leave under special conditions; cancelled as from 22 April 1920.

On being refused extension of leave, he wrote, 15 April 1920, seeking approval of his discharge in England: 'I mean to return to Australia but it is to Australia's benefit as much as my own that I should return fully qualified for my special work.'
