'For gallant conduct during the operations near ZONNEBEKE, East of YPRES. On 2nd November 1917 Driver MATTHEWS was a pack horse leader when the transport with rations and water suddenly came under an intense barrage, his horse being killed and 5 men wounded. He assisted the wounded to cover, and then helped to reorganise the pack train, showing the utmost coolness and disregard of his personal safety under heavy artillery fire. It was largely owing to this initiative that the rations were eventually got through to the Battalion.'
