War service: Egypt, Western Front Allotted and proceeded to join 57th Bn, Tel el Kebir, 23 February 1916. Transferred to 59th Bn, and taken on strength, 15 March 1916. Embarked Alexandria to join the British Expeditionary Force, 18 June 1916; disembarked Marseilles, France, 29 June 1916. Posted missing, 19 July 1916. Fae subsequently determined as 'Died of Wounds, 21 July 1916.' Statement, Red Cross File No 1740208, 2920 Pte A.F. LAWS, B Company, 59th Bn (patient, 3rd London General Hospital, Wandsworth, England)), 26 December 1916: 'I saw the grave marked by a cross of Pte A.C. Mathews (sic) in the Sailly Cemetery Nr. Armentieres and reported it to Lieut. Bursey. Cpl. Barret who was walking with me also saw it. About the 1st Aug.' |
