Military Medal 'On 11th April 1917 near BULLECOURT Private MATTHEWS who is a Battalion Stretcher Bearer did excellent work in bringing in the wounded from the front line under fire. Although this Battalion was not taking part in the attack Private MATTHEWS was scout all day bringing back wounded. At 6 p.m. he was told by the R.M.O. to rest, but although tired out, he insisted on going on with the work until all the wounded had ben brought in. He set a very fine example of courage, unselfishness and endurance, and was of great assistance in this dangerous work.'
