'Near BERNES on the night of the 15th/16th September L/Bdr. MAWHINNEY was lead driver and in charge of a six horse team in an ammunition wagon. At a point on the road near BERNES the column in which L/Bdr. MAWHINNEY's team was moving, came under heavy fire from 21 c.m. Hows. One Driver and four horses of MAWHINNEY's wounded. MAWHINNEY immediately dismounted, disentangled his leaders which were unhurt and handed them over to another team. He then returned to the scene of the casualty which was still being heavily shelled, to attend the wounded driver. His coolness and daring under most trying circumstances were a splendid example to the other men.'
